Morning sunlight is one of the strongest circadian cues. Regular meal timing, exercise, evening darkness, and a predictable wake time can also reinforce the schedule.
NUTRITION AND SLEEP
Use food to support sleep—not sabotage it
Sleep and nutrition affect one another in both directions. Poor sleep can drive cravings and appetite changes, while diet quality and meal timing may influence inflammation, metabolism, digestion, and sleep.
A Mediterranean-style diet is the dietary pattern most consistently associated with better sleep outcomes in large studies.
This approach emphasizes vegetables, fruit, legumes, whole grains, nuts, olive oil, and fish. It generally provides more fiber and fewer ultra-processed ingredients than a typical Western dietary pattern.
That does not mean one specific food will “cure” insomnia. The research is stronger for an overall pattern than for a single supplement, beverage, or bedtime snack.

Eat dinner earlier
When possible, avoid making the largest meal of the day immediately before bed.
Keep dinner lighter

Reduce late caffeine
Caffeine can remain active for hours. Consider moving the final dose earlier if falling asleep is difficult.
Prioritize fiber
Fiber-rich, minimally processed foods support digestive and microbial pathways associated with overall health.
Genetics, dose, medications, pregnancy, liver function, and habitual use can all influence how long caffeine remains active.
MOVEMENT
Exercise helps support sleep architecture
Consistent physical activity can improve how efficiently the body moves into and maintains sleep.
Lifestyle programs combining structured exercise with personalized dietary changes have improved objective sleep measures, including shorter sleep-onset latency and higher sleep efficiency.
Exercise can also support stress regulation, metabolic health, mood, inflammation, and daytime alertness—all factors that may indirectly affect sleep.
Use a manageable starting target
Aim for approximately twenty to thirty minutes of moderate activity on most days, adjusted to your health, fitness, and medical needs.
Very intense exercise immediately before bed may be stimulating for some people. If you notice that pattern, move harder workouts earlier rather than abandoning exercise altogether.

Human research supports a relationship between sleep health and the gut microbiome, but the findings do not yet form a simple equation.

A 2026 systematic review of nutritional and botanical interventions targeting the gut microbiota reported that many human trials showed improvements in subjective insomnia measures.
