COVID-19 Testing

What is COVID-19 Testing?

COVID-19 testing is a diagnostic procedure to confirm a SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes a COVID-19 infection. COVID-19 is a contagious virus that spreads from person to person through droplets that form when you cough, sneeze, or speak. An infection can cause a wide range of symptoms that can become life-threatening, especially in the elderly and those with weak immune systems. HealthWell Family Health offers in-office COVID-19 testing services to confirm an infection. The medical team can also provide treatments to ease the severity of your symptoms.

When should I schedule COVID-19 testing?

You should schedule COVID-19 testing at HealthWell Family Health if you develop symptoms of a viral infection such as: Persistent cough, fever or chills, muscle aches, sore throat, shortness of breath, and fatigue or weakness. You may also need PCR testing if you were around someone with a known COVID-19 infection. The medical team offers polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests to confirm or rule out a COVID- 19 infection. During your test, your provider collects a sample of fluids from the back of your nose with a cotton swab. While the test can be uncomfortable, it only takes a few seconds to collect the sample. The team sends the collected sample to a medical lab for further evaluation. Results of PCR tests can take 24 hours or longer to come back. The HealthWell Family Health team contacts you with your results when they're ready.

What happens after COVID-19 testing?

If your COVID-19 test is negative, you likely don't have an infection. However, it's still possible to get negative results and have COVID-19, especially if the infection is recent. If your test is positive, you likely have an active infection, even if you don't have symptoms. After positive test results, the HealthWell Family Health team can recommend strategies to ease your symptoms. You should also isolate yourself from others for at least five days. Many people recover from COVID-19 with rest and home care. You should seek emergency medical care at the nearest hospital if your symptoms become severe or you have difficulty breathing.
