When should I schedule a gynecology appointment?

You should schedule a gynecology appointment at HealthWell Family Health once a year for a routine breast and pelvic exam. You may also need gynecology care if you have issues that affect your reproductive health, fertility, or sexual wellness.

Younger girls should have their first gynecologic exam when they become sexually active or if they have issues with their menstrual cycle.

You may need more frequent gynecology exams to assess or monitor your condition if you have existing reproductive health issues, such as heavy or painful periods.

What happens during a gynecology appointment?

During your initial gynecology appointment at HealthWell Family Health, the medical team spends time reviewing your personal and family medical history. They can also answer any questions about your reproductive or sexual health. For your pelvic exam, the team manually checks your vagina and inner reproductive organs for fibroids or other issues. They also complete a Pap smear by collecting cells from your cervix with a small brush. Your provider sends the cell sample to a medical lab for further evaluation under a microscope. The team offers manual breast exams to identify early warning signs of breast cancer. Depending on the results of your exam and your age, they can refer you for a mammogram, a diagnostic imaging test to identify abnormal breast tissue related to cancer. If the results of your pelvic or breast exam or Pap smear are abnormal, you might need additional testing. The HealthWell Family Health team can refer you to medical specialists if you need treatment or specialized care.
