What are physicals?

Physicals are preventive health exams that can identify early warning signs of acute or chronic diseases before you experience any symptoms. The purpose of a physical is to identify potentially serious health complications in the earliest stage, when many conditions are easier to treat.

For example, by detecting hypertension (high blood pressure) early, you can make the necessary lifestyle and diet changes to get it under control and avoid the need for medication.

Physical exams also give the HealthWell Family Health team an opportunity to track changes in your health from one year to the next.

When should I schedule physicals?

You should schedule a routine physical once a year, even when you feel well and have no health concerns. Routine physicals are separate from other medical visits you might need for existing health conditions.

You might need a routine physical before starting school, a new job, or participating in organized sports.

HealthWell Family Health also offers physical exams that meet the specific requirements of organizations like the Department of Transportation (DOT). DOT physicals ensure you are healthy enough to operate a personal or commercial vehicle in a safe manner.

What happens during physicals?

During your initial physical at HealthWell Family Health, the team spends time reviewing your personal and family medical histories and learning more about your diet and lifestyle. As part of your physical, the team also makes detailed notes about your overall health, including your:

- Height
- Weight
- Blood pressure
- Lung function
- Heart rhythm
- Joint flexibility
- Muscle strength

You might also need blood work or other lab tests if you have risk factors for certain chronic conditions like diabetes or high cholesterol. HealthWell Family Health also offers gynecology services for women and may recommend a pelvic exam and Pap smear as part of your routine physical.

If you have any unexplained symptoms or concerns about your physical or mental health, your annual physical is an excellent time to discuss them. Your provider can also ensure you are  up to date on immunizations that protect against contagious diseases, including the seasonal flu.

If it has been over a year since you or your family members last had a physical, call HealthWell Family Health to schedule an appointment or book one online today.
